Walnut Park Play Area, Boston, MA

CBA designed the renovation of this neighborhood level playground as part of a combined contract with Crawford Street Playground; both parks have frontage on Walnut Avenue in the Roxbury neighborhood of Boston, but the two parks vary greatly in size and program, creating an opportunity to design complementary programs. Walnut Park Play Area occupies a residential scale corner lot surrounded by multi-family residential properties. The renovation program included replacing the play structures and safety surfacing; replacing a very old splash pad with a new efficient splashpad and a drinking fountain/bottle filler; reorganizing the site to create safety sight lines; and adding a shade structure with picnic tables. The renovation preserved a charming metal perimeter fence with a community art element of handprint panels.
