Williams Middle School Complex, Chelsea, MA

The Williams Complex consists of two of Chelsea’s middle schools, the Browne Middle School and the Wright Academy. Prior to its renovation, the schoolyard consisted of bare asphalt with poorly graded courts, no seating, and very little shade. CBA’s design preserved and protected all of the existing mature trees, and added both new shade trees and two shade structures over an outdoor stage and seating areas. A walking loop surrounds the space, which includes gathering areas, new multi-sport courts, and sealcoated play graphics. An outdoor classroom features a demonstration rain garden, and permeable pavers throughout the schoolyard infiltrate stormwater on site.
